Career Calling Mentors

Giving and receiving feedback

How mentors and mentees can be honest, kind and useful with each other.

For mentees: asking for feedback

  • Be specific about what you want feedback on, for example "the first paragraph of my cover letter" rather than "my application".
  • Listen to the end before you respond, and ask a question if something is unclear.
  • You do not have to agree with every suggestion. Thank your mentor and decide what to use.

For mentors: giving feedback

  • Start with what is working, then the one or two changes that would make the biggest difference.
  • Talk about the work, not the person, and give an example of what better could look like.
  • Check understanding: ask the mentee what they will take from the conversation.

Feedback on the mentoring itself

  • Every few sessions, ask each other what is helping and what could change.
  • If the match is not working, say so kindly, or tell our team. We can help adjust it or suggest someone else.
