Career Calling Mentors

Setting goals with your mentor

Turn "I want a better job" into steps you can act on this month.

Start with the direction

  • Describe the change you want in a sentence: the field, the kind of role, or the skill you want to grow.
  • It is fine to be unsure. Exploring is a goal too, and a mentor can help you test ideas.

Make it specific

  • Break the direction into steps you could finish in two to four weeks, such as rewriting your resume summary or speaking to two people in the field.
  • Name what "done" looks like for each step so you both know when it is finished.

Check it is yours

  • Goals work when they matter to you, not when they please someone else.
  • Your mentor can challenge and suggest, but you decide what you work on.

Review as you go

  • Start each session with what happened since the last one: what worked, what did not, and what you learned.
  • Adjust the plan. Changing a goal because you learned something is progress, not failure.
